On March 31, 2008 Milan have won the competition to be avvarded the Expo 2015 with 86 votes agaist 65 of Smirne.
Expo theme: "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life".
On show at Expo 2015: the great issues of sustainable development.
It will be an extraordinary universal event displaying tradition, creativity and innovation in the business of food. It will bring together many themes that have already been handled by this event in the past, and set them out anew in light of new global possibilities whose common core is the idea that everyone on the planet should have access to food that is healthy, safe and sufficient.
As its aims demonstrate, this Expo - dedicated to food safety, security and quality- is intended to stimulate the regional and national economies and showcase Italy's - and Milan's - outstanding qualities when it comes to food.
The Expo will be located on a site covering 1.7 million sq. m. in the north-west of Milan comprising part of the municipal territory of Pero and Rho.
During the first half of the last century, part of this area was occupied by manufacturing industries, while the remaining farm land has been gradually occupied by shipping warehouses and municipal services.
The realisation of the new Fiera Milano exhibition complex, based on an architectural project by Massimiliano Fuksas, is of such outstanding quality and economic importance that it has led to the transformation and regeneration of the entire area, with the retirement or relocation of existing facilities and the definition of new uses for former agricultural land.
